How Great Things Get Better

I was having a great time in Korea. The job that I was assigned while stationed at Kunsan Air Base was one that gave me quite a bit of time to live the life of a weekend tourist. As I said in my previous post, I went to as many cities and explored lots of different places. Looking back, I regret not taking even more pictures than I did. No matter where I went, there was always multitude of beautiful places to behold.

I truly felt like I was in the minority. It was very common for me to talk to my military friends about the great time I was having only for them to laugh at me or make fun. Most of them thought that having fun in Korea was impossible. At first, I was confused. It didn’t take long before I realized the problem: they didn’t want to have fun.

Getting stationed at Kunsan forces a service member to leave family, friends, and country behind to go to a different country for a year. Many volunteer, hoping it will open doors for them to go to a better base in a different country. Many times, they will send for their families and they can meet them or travel together with them to the next place. So really, Korea is like a stepping stone. It is just the road for them to get to their next destination. Originally, it was supposed to be the same for me. I didn’t know anything about Korea prior to my arrival. I’m so glad my eyes were opened!

Just when I thought my life was good, it got a whole lot better!

One Saturday in August, I went back to one of my favorite cities, Daegu. This time, I traveled alone and I didn’t have anyone set up to be my guide. My goal was simply to walk around the areas outside the bus terminal and go inside the many shops and the markets outside, eat some good food, and call it a day.

I had absolutely no intention to meet my future wife that day.

I’ll talk more about that meeting… next time!

Until then, Take care!
